What happens to your investments if your distributor dies?

If your mutual fund distributor dies, your investments are completely safe and stay invested. No new business can be placed under a deceased distributor's ARN. A nominee or legal heir may, in defined cases, take over the ARN within a transfer window that was extended from six months to twelve months in October 2025. You can also simply move to a new distributor.

Key facts

  • Your units and SIPs are unaffected; the distributor never held your money, only serviced the folios.
  • No new business can be transacted under a deceased distributor's ARN (Para 5.5.2, 6.6.3).
  • A nominee or eligible legal heir may take over the ARN in defined circumstances.
  • The window to do so was extended from six months to twelve months in October 2025.

Your money was never with the distributor

This is the reassurance that matters most: a distributor never holds your money. Your investments sit with the mutual fund, in your name, serviced through the distributor's ARN. If the distributor dies, your units, your SIPs and your holding periods are all unaffected.

What the rules provide

No new business can be transacted under a deceased distributor's ARN (Para 5.5.2, 6.6.3). In defined circumstances, a nominee or eligible legal heir may take over the ARN so that continuity is preserved. The window to complete such a transfer was extended from six months to twelve months in October 2025, giving families more time to act.

What you can do

You have two clean paths. Either the ARN is transferred to an eligible successor, or you move your folios to a distributor of your choice. In both cases your investments continue without interruption.

Frequently asked questions

Are my investments safe if my distributor dies?

Yes, entirely. A distributor never holds your money; they only service your folios. Your units and SIPs remain invested and untouched. What ends is the servicing relationship, which you can re-establish.

Can someone take over the ARN?

In defined circumstances a nominee or eligible legal heir may take over the deceased distributor's ARN. The window to complete this was extended from six months to twelve months in October 2025.

What if no one takes over?

No new business can run under a deceased distributor's ARN, so if there is no transfer, you would move your folios to a new distributor using the prescribed change form. Your holdings continue throughout.
