How do you change your mutual fund distributor?
Key facts
- The change is made using the prescribed change-of-distributor form (Annexure 10 to the AMFI Master Circular).
- Your signature is verified against records, and you receive a confirmation SMS on T+1 (the next business day).
- The change takes effect on the T+11th business day after confirmation (Para 6.1).
- You cannot be forced to obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from your existing distributor (Para 6.1).
- Changing distributor does not redeem or alter your holdings; only who services them changes.
You are allowed to leave, simply
Your distributor services your folios; they do not own them. If you want to move to a different distributor, you can, and the rules are designed so that no one can hold your investments hostage to keep you.
The single most important point: you cannot be compelled to obtain a no-objection certificate from your existing distributor. If anyone tells you that you need their sign-off to leave, that is not correct under Para 6.1 of the AMFI Master Circular.
The timeline, precisely
Vague answers help no one here, so the specifics matter. After you submit the prescribed form, the registrar verifies your signature, sends you a confirmation SMS on the next business day (T+1), and the change becomes effective on the eleventh business day (T+11). If the confirmation SMS does not arrive, that is your signal to follow up with the registrar.
What does not change
Changing distributor is not a redemption. Your units stay invested, your SIPs keep running, and your holding period for tax continues uninterrupted. The only thing that changes is who is recorded as servicing the folio.
One thing that does change is commission. Under the cooling-off rule, the new distributor does not earn trail commission on your existing investments for twelve months. We explain that fully in how distributors are paid.

Steps to change your mutual fund distributor
- Fill the prescribed form. Complete the change-of-distributor form (Annexure 10), giving your folio details and the new distributor's ARN.
- Submit to the RTA or AMC. Submit it to the Registrar and Transfer Agent (CAMS or KFintech) or the AMC, in the manner they accept.
- Signature verification. The registrar verifies your signature against its records before acting on the request.
- Confirmation on T+1. You receive a confirmation SMS on the next business day after the request is processed.
- Change effective on T+11. The distributor change takes effect on the eleventh business day after confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a no-objection certificate from my current distributor?
No. The AMFI Master Circular is explicit that you cannot be compelled to obtain a no-objection certificate from your existing distributor. A distributor who insists on one is acting against the Code.
Will my SIPs and investments be disturbed when I change distributor?
No. A change of distributor only changes who services your folios. Your units, SIPs and holdings continue unchanged. Nothing is redeemed.
How long does the change take?
You receive a confirmation SMS on the next business day (T+1), and the change takes effect on the eleventh business day (T+11) after that confirmation.
Does the new distributor start earning commission immediately?
No. Under the cooling-off rule, the new distributor does not receive trail commission on your existing investments for twelve months after the change. If you switch back, the clock restarts.
