KYC Validated, Registered and On-Hold, what do they mean?
Key facts
- Validated is the highest state; your details are confirmed with issuing authorities and PAN is Aadhaar-linked.
- A Validated KYC is portable across fund houses without repeating the process.
- Registered is verified but not fully validated, and may need re-verification with a new fund house.
- On-Hold blocks all transactions, including new investments and redemptions, until resolved.
Three states, one system
Since 1 April 2024, your mutual fund KYC carries one of three statuses. They sit on a ladder, and knowing where you are tells you what, if anything, to do.
Validated
This is the top of the ladder. Your PAN, address and contact details have been independently confirmed with the issuing authorities, and your PAN is linked to Aadhaar. A Validated KYC is fully portable: you can invest with any fund house without redoing the process. It is the status worth aiming for.
Registered
Registered means you are verified, but not fully validated, often because your KYC was done with documents that were not Aadhaar-validated. You can generally continue with fund houses you already invest in, but a new fund house may ask for additional verification before it accepts you.
Please verify: the exact transaction rights of a Registered investor when approaching a new fund house should be confirmed against the current KRA framework before relying on the detail.
On-Hold
On-Hold is the one to act on. It signals a deficiency, commonly an unvalidated email or mobile, a non-Aadhaar document that needs extra checks, or a PAN-Aadhaar issue. While your KYC is On-Hold you cannot transact at all, neither invest nor redeem. The fix is a re-KYC or correction.
The practical rule: check your status before you need to transact, so an On-Hold never surprises you. If yours is unclear, talk to us.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Validated and Registered?
Validated means your PAN, address and contact details are independently confirmed with the issuing authorities and your PAN is Aadhaar-linked, and this status is fully portable. Registered means you are verified but not fully validated, so a new fund house may ask for extra verification.
Why is my KYC On-Hold?
On-Hold usually means a deficiency, such as an email or mobile that has not been validated, a non-Aadhaar document that needs extra checks, or a PAN-Aadhaar linking issue. Until it is resolved, you cannot invest or redeem.
How do I move from Registered or On-Hold to Validated?
Complete a re-KYC using Aadhaar-based validation and confirm your email and mobile. Once your details are validated with the issuing authorities, your status can move to Validated, which is the most portable state.
