What happens if your distributor's ARN has expired?

If your mutual fund distributor's ARN has expired, transactions you place cannot earn them commission and are processed under the Direct Plan instead. Your existing investments are safe and stay invested. If the ARN remains unrenewed beyond three months, the AMC writes to you as a unitholder so you know your distributor's registration has lapsed.

Key facts

  • Transactions placed under an invalid or expired ARN are processed under the Direct Plan (Para 5.3.2, note iv).
  • If the ARN is not renewed within three months, the AMC intimates the affected unitholders (Para 5.3.2, note vi).
  • Your existing units and SIPs are not redeemed; only new commission-bearing business is affected.
  • An ARN is valid for three years and must be renewed before it lapses (Para 1.10.1).

Your investments are not in danger

The first thing to know is the calming one: an expired ARN does not touch your existing holdings. Your units stay invested and your SIPs continue. What an expired ARN affects is new, commission-bearing business.

What actually changes

Transactions you place while the ARN is invalid cannot earn the distributor commission, so they are processed under the Direct Plan instead (Para 5.3.2, note iv). And if the ARN stays unrenewed beyond three months, the AMC writes to you as a unitholder so the lapse does not go unnoticed (Para 5.3.2, note vi).

What to do

Start by verifying the ARN so you know its real status. Then decide: give the distributor time to renew, or change to a distributor with a valid ARN. A lapse is not an emergency, but it is a prompt to check that you are still being looked after.

Frequently asked questions

Are my investments at risk if my distributor's ARN expires?

No. Your existing units and SIPs stay invested and are not redeemed. What changes is that new transactions cannot earn the distributor commission and are processed under the Direct Plan until the ARN is renewed.

Will anyone tell me my distributor's ARN has lapsed?

Yes. If the ARN is not renewed within three months, the AMC writes to the affected unitholders, so you are informed rather than left to discover it.

What should I do about it?

You can wait for the distributor to renew, or you can move to a distributor with a valid ARN using the prescribed change form. Either way, verify the current ARN status first.
