What is an EUIN in mutual funds?
Key facts
- The ARN identifies the distributor firm; the EUIN identifies the individual person who interacted with you (Para 5.2).
- A missing or invalid EUIN must be remedied within 30 days (Para 5.2.3).
- If it is not remedied, the commission on that transaction is forfeited by the distributor (Para 5.2.3).
- The EUIN is what lets a complaint be traced to the actual person, not just the firm.
Two identifiers, two purposes
Every mutual fund transaction placed through a distributor carries two codes. The ARN identifies the distributor firm. The EUIN, the Employee Unique Identification Number, identifies the individual person who actually interacted with you.
The reason for two is accountability. If you were told something that turned out to be wrong, the EUIN points to the named individual who told you, not just the firm they work for.
The 30-day rule
If a transaction should carry an EUIN and it is missing or invalid, it is not simply ignored. The distributor has 30 days to remedy it. If it is not remedied within that window, the commission on that transaction is forfeited (Para 5.2.3). That penalty is deliberate: it makes capturing the right EUIN the distributor's problem, not yours.
What to check
When you sign a transaction, look for the EUIN. If the box is blank, you may be signing an execution-only declaration, which means something specific. It is worth understanding before you sign.
If any of this feels unclear on a form in front of you, ask us before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an ARN and an EUIN?
The ARN identifies the distributor firm. The EUIN identifies the specific individual employee or partner who interacted with you. Both appear on your transaction so responsibility can be traced to a named person, not just the firm.
What happens if the EUIN box is left blank?
A blank EUIN box usually means you are asked to confirm the transaction was executed without any advice from a named person. If an EUIN should have been captured, the distributor has 30 days to remedy it, failing which the commission is forfeited.
Why should I care about the EUIN?
If you were mis-sold a scheme, the EUIN identifies the individual who spoke to you, which makes a complaint far easier to pursue. It is a protection, so check that it is filled in.
